The problem with anti-discrimination laws intruding into the private sector is that there is no end to how far that they can go.
Some misguided souls believe all discrimination must be eliminated by the government.
If all discrimination is ended, then one couldn't even choose one's own spouse!! - Out of fear of discriminating against an old abandoned lover.

I believe equality before the government is a lofty goal, but that equality in the private sphere should be left up to the people to figure out and the government should stay out of it.

Case in point (relevant to [9]), I tried three weeks ago to find accommodation for a single female friend of mine in Chennai. I would have definitely appreciated replies other than we don't rent to single females.

I for one, like these anti-discriminatory laws a lot. I don't see how these unreasonably interfere with any of your "rights" and would in fact love to see such laws come up in India.

I don't see why anyone should have the right to humiliate me by telling me that they are firing me, refusing me roommate acco, or doing something just as blatantly hateful just because I am an Indian. I very much love and appreciate the fact that they would have to try much harder to express their hate (that is if I were in the US).

There is no doubt that discrimination can be extremely offensive and pernicious; thus the idea of allowing people to discriminate may strike some as going too far. In the end however, as Prof. Bernstein puts it, “it is a small price to pay for preserving the pluralism, autonomy and check on government power provided by civil liberties.”

Pardon me but that sounds like it was spoken by a person who hasn't ever seen any real discrimination being done to anyone. That price, sir, is by no means small. It is huge. I am in a land where that kind of discrimination is legal and let me tell you, it's not so rosy when you are at the receiving end.
